The sunshine is always encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>In writing the introduction, I&#8217;m trying to remember what I find or have found inspiring about my research site. At one point they wrote this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div title=\"Page 1\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>L\u2019universit\u00e9 est riche des espaces et des exp\u00e9riences d\u2019\u00e9mancipation. Comme telle, elle est publique.<\/p>\n<p><em>The university is rich in spaces and experiences of emancipation. As such, it is public<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div title=\"Page 1\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In an era where higher education in the United States is largely dominated by economistic impulses and further dominated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2013\/08\/12\/new-book-examines-higher-education-through-lens-zombie-apocalypse\">the husks<\/a> of an unrealizable humanistic project that generally aims to produce at best more &#8220;cultivated&#8221; or &#8220;critical&#8221; liberal subjects, it&#8217;s a bit jarring to be exposed to this blunt piece of French left universalism: the university is\u00a0<em>emancipatory<\/em> and\u00a0<em>emancipation must be available to all<\/em>. That&#8217;s a thought that just wouldn&#8217;t be thinkable in most American contexts I&#8217;ve encountered.
